Waggle Dance

Collaborative project with Rachel Joynt

Iontas Building Maynooth University

Bronze

3m Sphere

2014

Waggle Dance by Remco de Fouw & Rachel Joynt, installed adjacent to the Iontas Building, at the main plaza at Maynooth University.

The Iontas Building, designed by Scott Tallon Walker, acts as a hub for the campus in general. The activities in the building include the NCG engaged in Geo-computational Data mapping and an Foras Feasa, engaged in the digital archiving of historic Irish culture.

Concept

The concept was to draw on the activities within the building and reflect these in the work. Ideas about the archiving of data and hexagonal global mapping techniques are reflected in the honeycomb or beehive.

The occupation of keeping bees was also a pastime of the original seminary from which the university grew. The sculpture acts as a fitting metaphor for teamwork, nurturing of ideas and storage of “wealth” and preservation of ecology. It consists of 670 Cells made of stainless and bronze plate and perforated with dozens of apertures which together. With the faceted edges give it a playful tension and feeling of lightness and transparency.
